Assessment

My support for your child is likely to start with assessment. Assessment is crucial to understanding the needs of your child so that I can tailor my advice and therapy most appropriately.

Speech, language and communication difficulties cover a range of skills. Assessment may involve all or only some of these. The diagram below gives an illustration of the range of speech, language and communication difficulties.

What will happen:-

  • Discussion about your child’s strengths and areas of concern, and a comprehensive background history

  • With agreement, there may also be discussion with other agencies such as nursery or school staff, or potentially other therapists who might be involved (e.g. NHS Speech and Language therapist)

  • One to one assessment with your child. This may involve formal assessment (standardised assessments which compare your child with other children of the same age from the rest of the population) or informal often play based assessment activities an observations.

  • Verbal feedback following the assessment where we can discuss my findings and discuss next steps, including whether I recommend therapy session.

  • I will provide a summary written report following the initial assessment

  • I can also provide a more detailed report if this is required. There will be an additional charge for this based on my hourly rate.
